Give me a ‘W’

Give me a ‘W’.. blah blah blah.. what does it stand for?

Wednesday!!

Oh yeah.. Wednesday has officially become my fav day of the week. Cos I have no therapy and no sch.. Greatness! But today, kakak had to call at 7am, telling me that im needed for relief teaching at her school. I was soooo close to saying ‘malas lah’ or ‘ngantuk ah’ which i was (since i slept at 4am) but i couldnt fall aslp even before that, so i decided to make some easy money.

Teaching a sec sch is not sumthg new to me cos i did long term relief back in 2002 while waiting to enter NUS. But armed with more knowledge especially about child psychology, it makes the experience much more different. Furthermore, the 6years in between makes a whole lot of difference in the behaviour and probably the mental state of the children. I began to appreciate my children with autism so much more and falling in love with them even with my Woodlands boy. Give me Woodlands boy anytime, even on his bad, bad days but i can’t stand being around teenagers with the mind of a 2 year old.

Apologies to all the lovely toddlers for the comparison. It is definitely insulting to them. I just don’t understand why at 13 or 14, you are unable to conduct yourself in the proper manner. What i mean by proper is not cos of my beliefs of value systems. BUT it is the basic understanding or contract between humans to respect and display behaviour that is a reflection of the mental capacity and stage of development of oneself.

Probably these children were not given enough opportunities to nurture and grow cognitively, socially and emotionally when they were younger. Pardon me for being judgemental but im a behaviourist and armed with Vygotsky’s theories, i jus have to believe that these teenagers lack the social, emotional and cognitive skills and strategies.

It’s super depressing to think of the young generation. And it sure makes me feel OLD.
